The challenge

Orion Health is a global leader in healthcare technology with over 18 years’ experience working with the NHS. Hundreds of thousands of clinicians in over 15 countries use their solutions every day to improve care for more than 100 million patients.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System worked with Orion Health to implement Amadeus, Orion Health’s platform for advanced population health management and precision medicine, serving the region’s 1.9 million population. The ICS had already selected Orion Health to power CHIE – the Care and Health Information Exchange, which draws on data from over 150 GP surgeries alongside local hospitals, community health, mental health and social care teams. Amadeus, Orion Health’s population health management platform, would sit above this infrastructure – enabling clinicians to move from simply viewing patient records to identifying at-risk cohorts and intervening proactively.

One feature Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICS specifically needed was integration with GP practice systems through EMIS. Orion Health had been confident that EMIS was accessible via the public internet. Late in project delivery, they discovered that access to live EMIS data was only available via an HSCN connection. Orion Health explored vendor solutions for HSCN connectivity but found them all heavyweight, with long lead times that would delay the agreed go-live date.

What we did

We set up a working proof of concept in minutes. A new platform tenant with scalable HSCN connectivity was fully provisioned in 3 days from first engagement.

The platform’s compatibility with AWS environments worked seamlessly with Orion Health’s automated deployment tooling. The two platforms lined up without integration friction, meaning an entire production-grade Orion Health environment could subsequently be deployed in hours with Cloud Gateway connectivity included.
